The procedure is done on an outpatient basis. A general anesthetic is given to the young children; a local anesthetic is given to the adult. There is virtually little pain after this type of surgery. The thin scars resulting from the incisions are located behind each ear and are automatically hidden by them. A turban type bandage is worn about the head to cover the ears for one week after surgery. After this is removed, the patient wears a thin nylon cap or headband pulled down over the ears while sleeping to protect the ears fro another two weeks.
